What Is a Direct Cut Super Audio CD?
On a Super Audio CD (SACD), sound is recorded in DSD (Direct Stream Digital). Its 2.8224 MHz sampling frequency is 64 times that of a traditional CD, and with 1-bit quantization DSD delivers a broader frequency range (up to 100 kHz) and greater dynamics (120 dB) across the entire audio range.
Until recently it was practically impossible to stay in DSD through the whole edit, mix and mastering chain. Routine steps like gain leveling, mixing, cross-fades, EQ and dynamics processing required downconverting to PCM, the format of the traditional CD.
Stockfisch recorded, processed and mastered this Direct Cut SACD on a SADiE DSD8 system, which records 8 channels simultaneously. The microphone signal is converted to DSD at the input and kept in DSD-Wide format at 2.8224 MHz through every processing stage. The finished "cutting master" (AIT tape) is transferred directly to an SACD glass master at the pressing plant.
The result: a true DSD stereo mix on the SACD layer plus a 16-bit PCM stereo program on the CD layer for full compatibility, giving you the chance to compare a real DSD recording with the conventional CD format.
