Miles Davis’ Birth of the Blue brings four 1958 sextet performances together on Analogue Productions 180g 45 RPM vinyl 2LP. Plated and pressed at Quality Record Pressings, this standalone release is housed in a Stoughton Printing Old Style tip-on heavyweight gatefold jacket.
Recorded in a single session, these performances feature the same ensemble that would record Kind of Blue almost a year later: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. The session took place in the same studio and offers an early glimpse of the modal jazz direction that would become central to Kind of Blue.
Previously treated largely as additions to compilations, the four recordings receive a dedicated album presentation here. Settle in with “On Green Dolphin Street,” then explore “Fran-Dance,” “Stella by Starlight” and “Love for Sale,” with one performance on each side.
