Patricia Barber's All-Standards Follow-Up to Nightclub
Known for boldly blurring the lines between poetry, jazz, and art song, Patricia Barber returns with her long-awaited second all-standards album, first released August 6, 2021. Clique gathers tunes Barber has often performed as encores throughout her career, including classics by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stevie Wonder, Lee Hazlewood, Lerner & Loewe, and Thelonious Monk.
Barber was the first non-classical songwriter awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In the liner notes, NPR's Susan Stamberg calls the album a "silk, velvet, languid, warm" journey that "respects traditions, bends them to make her own points, and freshens them into something new."
These are relaxed, communal sessions. Barber's long-time duo of bassist Patrick Mulcahy and drummer Jon Deitemyer move in and out of her complex, sensitive piano and reflective vocals, joined by guitarist Neal Alger and saxophonist Jim Gailloreto. That years-deep chemistry is exactly what gives the album its name.
